X-Wing Storage

One of the downsides of the X-Wing Miniatures game is because the basic game is quite small, you’ll soon want to make use of the various expansions – i.e. additional ships.  Given the starter set comes with 3 ships and the rules/templates/counters etc. there really isn’t room in there for your growing squadrons.  That ultimately leads to needing to find an alternative solution, and there are a number of them out there.

A couple of companies have created some fantastic bespoke foam storage for X-Wing, which is great if you have a pretty decent wallet, or at least don’t mind parting with a considerable amount of your hard earned cash.  The review’s I’ve read are pretty complimentary for most of them in terms of storing the actual ships, but I want to keep everything together and in a very portable way.  I don’t want, for example, to take my stuff over to Gallanteer’s for the weekend only to find I’ve left the rulebooks or rulers or something behind at home.  I also want lots of expansion options for my fleet as it grows.  the bespoke foam is shaped to fit specific ships, which would drive my OCD mental if I had spaces for ships I didn’t plan to buy and no space for ships I had multiple copies of.

IMG_0771I have bought 3 boxes – one for the general game stuff, one for my Imperial ships and one for my Rebels.  With 3 boxes that gives me plenty of combinations of small, medium and large compartments.  One of the other great things is that the compartments have small feet that sit into cutouts in the floor of the box – as a result you can also leave gaps without having the compartments slide around – perfect for storing the rulebooks and the range rulers etc.

IMG_0773So there you have it.  To protect the ships even further I bought some thin foam padding and lined the ship boxes.  The lid also has small plastic protrusions that further prevent the compartments from moving around.  There are lots of options out there, and doubtless better ones than this, but for the money, flexibility and uncanny sizing of the compartments, it’s a winner for us!
